Read

Hebrews 1:5-7 (NLT)

5For God never said to any angel what he said to Jesus: “You are my Son. Today I have become your Father.” And again God said, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son.” 6And then, when he presented his honored Son to the world, God said, “Let all the angels of God worship him.” 7God calls his angels “messengers swift as the wind, and servants made of flaming fire.”

Reflect

What was usually the first thing an angel would say to a human when they “suddenly appeared”? Do not be afraid! Why do you think they had to say that? Could it be that most of us would need to use the rest room if an angel suddenly appeared to us?

Beginning in the Old Testament, people had elevated angels to a place right below God. They were powerful beings. God used them as messengers, guardians, warriors and ministering spirits. Some people, like John, even wanted to bow down and worship them. In the Old Testament, angels were collectively called “sons of God” but not one angel was ever called God’s Son. Only Jesus was called “Son” by God. And, not only did the Father call Jesus, His Son, God then commanded the angels to worship Jesus.

Respond

When you think of angels, what comes to mind?

According to today’s Scripture reading, what is the difference between angels and Jesus, God’s Son?

Take a few minutes right now to worship Jesus along with the angels of heaven.
