1So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it. 2The message God delivered through angels has always proved true, and the people were punished for every violation of the law and every act of disobedience. 3What makes us think that we can escape if we are indifferent to this great salvation that was announced by the Lord Jesus himself? It was passed on to us by those who heard him speak, 4and God verified the message by signs and wonders and various miracles and by giving gifts of the Holy Spirit whenever he chose to do so.
Reflect
Our annual canoe trip down the Niobrara river has been a great experience for me. It is a lazy river that doesn’t flow very fast. Even the least experienced person can have fun on this river. There are dangers though. If you don’t pay attention, you could go over some pretty severe rapids and risk the chance of getting injured or possibly even killed.
In our reading today, the writer of Hebrew’s warns us to pay attention. Wake Up! If disobedience of the old law, delivered to us through the angels, brought a physical punishment how much more will this be true if we neglect a salvation mediated through the Son.
Respond
What punishment should we receive if we neglect the gift of salvation?
How does God verify Jesus’ message of salvation to you today?
What can you do to guard yourself from becoming indifferent to salvation?
